At the age of 13, Stephen was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma, a very rare and aggressive form of bone cancer. With the odds stacked against him, Stephen fought his disease with great courage for 16 months and inspired many with his humor, perseverance, and concern for others despite his difficult battle.
Blessed with a great team of oncology doctors and nurses at Cook Children’s Hospital, Stephen and the Breen family also had the support of their family and friends, many of whom were part of their Catholic family. Stephen felt very fortunate to have such a large support system that he wanted to find a way to give back in return.
On October 4, 2004 Stephen passed away and his foundation was created. Honoring his wishes, the Stephen Breen Memorial Foundation offers tuition assistance to children who wish to receive a Catholic school education and assistance to families who have children that are also battling cancer.
Anyone who met Stephen was impacted by his life example, and now through his foundation many more will be helped for years to come.
